John Roil

John Roil came over to our class and talked to us about hiking and camping. He used to be in the army and he goes hunting a lot. Here are some things you have to do while camping.

Before you go tell someone where you are going and show them the map. Make sure you have broken in shoes you can fit and something to contact people with for an emergency.

Also train. You need to be strong, be able to swim and have lots of energy. If you don’t you might drown, collapse or fall.

You will need water and food. Big woolen socks. The wool wet is 70% warmer than it is dry. If you are camping you need extra clothes and a tent. You will also need a sleeping pad, sleeping bag and a bivie bag. A torch and batteries. For the food you will need a gas bottle and a lighter.

You will need a first aid kit. In your first aid it you should have Medicine or pills for a condition, scissors and a bandage. And also pack some plaster and some cream. If you have a group make sure you know their allergies and weaknesses. Also know what the plants can do to you and take the right medical supplies incase you encounter them.

So you know where you're going take a map, compass or a GPS. If you forget to bring these use moss, sun and spider webs for direction. The sun never goes to your south, moss only grows facing south and spiders build their webs facing north.

Incase of an a emergency use STAR. STAR stands for stop, think, assess and respond. But if you're lost stop and yell.

For the weather always check the forecast. But just incase bring a windbreaker and a raincoat. Maybe even an emergency shelter just incase.

Make sure you have all these things before you go camping.
